The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called on the government to focus on fixing the economy.

According to him, the government's sole focus is on securing a second term instead of revitalising the economy.

"Our nation is in crisis, and times have never been as hard as they are now. A recent report said 55 percent of Ghanaians are living in poverty, almost 2 million youths are not in education, employment, or training. 2 million people are sitting idle at home. This is a very dangerous statistic. When NDC was in power, unemployment was 8 percent; today, it is 14 percent. For women and others who frequent the market, we have the highest food inflation. If you are ill and know it's malaria, you are halfway towards the cure. The people who have caused the crisis don’t understand the situation; they say they are the best government and Nkrumah does not come in," he stated.

Mahama said there are urgent measures the government can take to ameliorate the situation.

"You say you will rationalise taxes; five months to an election is enough time to rationalise taxes. All the promises you are making, you have enough time to start implementing them now, but you say, 'No, vote for me first, then I will come and do it.' What they did in 2016, they can’t do again," he said.

He said going into the 2024 elections, Ghanaians are wide awake, and false promises by the NPP cannot work.
