Cape Coast, May 30, GNA - A total of 50,141 new eligible voters registered in the Central Region when the voters register was re-opened for people who had turned 18, as well as those who could not register during the previous registration from May 5 to 14.
Out of the number, 35,117 are between 18 and 19 years and the remaining 15,024 of 20 years and above.
Mr Samuel Tettey, Central Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC) who disclosed this in an interview with the GNA at Cape Coast on Tuesday said, Cape Coast Municipality recorded the highest number of 7,297 new registrations, with Assin South District recording the lowest of 1,916.
Awutu-Effutu-Senya District had 5,573 new voters, Agona District 4,989, Gomoa District 4,542, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem 4,343, Mfantseman 4,099 and Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese registered 3,284 voters. The rest are, Upper Denkyira, 3,130, Assin North, 3,082, Twifo Hemang-Lower Denkyira, 3045, Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa, 2,405 and Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam, 2,402.
Mr Tettey said, 51 people however, either had their stated ages, identities, or nationality, challenged but they were allowed to register.
He said registration review committees would soon be established in all the districts to investigate the challenges and those found to be qualified would have their names added in the register before it was exhibited.
Mr Tettey called on the public to endeavour to cross check their names when the register was exhibited to ensure that their names were in the register.
