Sunyani (B/A), Feb. 5, GNA – The national delegates congress of the people National Convention (PNC) ended peacefully on Sunday morning with election of Mr. Hassan Ayariga as the party’s new presidential candidate.
Mr. Ayariga, a 40 year-old entrepreneur, obtained 483 votes to beat Dr. Edward Nasigre Mahama, the 2008 presidential candidate of the party, who secured 426 votes.
Dr. Mahama, a gynecologist/obstetrician had been the flagbearer of the PNC since 1992.
Voting started exactly 2245 hours at the Sunyani Polytechnic auditorium on Saturday and ended around 0300 hours on Sunday. The election was conducted and supervised by officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) and by 0500 hours counting was over.
Mr. Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan, incumbent National Chairman retained his position with 362 votes to beat three other contenders - Dr. Edward Gyader who had 287 votes; Mr. David Nibi, 189 votes; and Mr. Thomas Akum-Young, 66 votes.
Mr. Bernard Mornah was also retained as General Secretary with 437 votes, followed by Mr. Atik Mohammed and Mr. Henry Asante who had 404 and 71 votes respectively.
The National Organiser position went to Mr. Emmanuel Wilson, who had 452 votes with Abubakar Ebla Kwashie and Mr. Omar Ahmed Bekura polling 210 and 239 votes respectively.
Hajia Hajara Ali was elected unopposed as First National Chairperson, since she was the only aspirant who had filed at the close of nominations.
Janet Asana Nabila became the Women’s Organiser securing 490 votes to beat her only rival Miss Elizabeth Amedekanyu who had 407 votes.
Mr. David Apasera was elected Treasurer with 493 beating Mr. Peter Batsa Teye who had 411 votes.
The position of National Youth Organiser went to Mr. Abu Ramadan, who obtained 490 votes to beat his two contenders, Mr. Nuhu Abass and Mr. Colson Akanbasian securing 134 and 277 votes respectively.
Mr. Ebenezer Aggrey-Fynn, Commission Member (EC), who announced the results commended the delegates for the peaceful manner they comported themselves, which he said made the work of the EC easier.
Dr. Edward Mahama, who conceded defeat expressed appreciation to the EC and thanked all members and supporters of the party for giving him the opportunity to lead the PNC for the past years.
He assured the new leadership he was ever ready to lend his support in championing the cause of the PNC.
Mr. Ayariga, the elected flagbearer, thanked the delegates for the confidence reposed in him and gave the assurance that the new leadership would work hard to maximize the fortunes of the party in this year's December general elections.
He observed that his election as the party’s flagbearer would not only enhance the chances of the party in the elections but would also inspire the youth in other political parties to aim higher.
