PNC praises Italians

Accra, May 5, GNA - The People's National Convention on Friday congratulated Italians for the patience and absolute tolerance exhibited whilst the political structure sorted itself out on the thorny and dicey issue of who led the country, following a dispute over election results. The Corte di Cassazione, an Italian court of last resort, upheld the election victory of l'Unione after a near-tie voting results between the l'Unione led by Prodi and Casa delle Liberta led by Silvio Berlusconi. "This admirable display of maturity by Italians deserves emulation and commendation and we do so in no uncertain terms," PNC said in a statement issued on Friday.

The PNC said it was happy with the decision of the Italian people to entrust their hopes and aspirations in a leftist regime led by Romano Prodi.

It wished Prodi as he assumed the mantle of leading his country to let humanity in general benefit from his rule. The statement praised the campaigning of Prodi that shot him to the high position in Italian politics, saying it was devoid of vituperations, insults, personality attacks and was marked by decency to the highest order."

The statement said it was, therefore, not surprising that the Italians "voted boldly in favour of a paradigm shift in governance from rightism to a leftist agenda".

The PNC said it was heart-warming to see Italy added to many countries in recent times advocating for governments with socialist orientation which the PNC stood for. It said: "The world has come to the painful realisation that extreme capitalism has left a large section of society hugely impoverished whilst a few continue to wallow in vulgar opulence. "It is this dichotomy in the accessibility and distribution of world resources that to us in the PNC has ensured the resounding and sweet victory you chalked in the elections."

The statement expressed the hope that the marginalised in the Italian society would see an improvement in their conditions of living. 5 May 06
