National Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nii-Allotey Brew-Hammond, has hinted that his party will abolish both the Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS) education system when voted into office in the November 7 polls.
Describing the system as “ineffective,” he said a PPP government will replace it with an effective collage system that will produce students who can compete with students from the other parts of the world.
Mr. Brew-Hammond made these observations in an exclusive interview with Today after the launch of a national “House-to-House and Village-to-Village” campaign in Accra on Saturday, May 21, 2016 to confirm the party’s 2016 parliamentary candidates in the Greater Accra Region.
According to him, a sound education is the bedrock of every nation, hence the PPP’s desire to sanitise and restructure the country’s education system.
He explained that a PPP government will introduce a combined twelve (12) years programme primary and secondary education.
“With this six-year secondary education system, students will graduate with college diploma which can guarantee them job offers,” he added.
In his opinion, the current three-year SHS system does not allow students to mature before exiting to pursue higher education, which situation, he said, has resulted in many drop-outs in the country.
Earlier, the PPP parliamentary candidate for Odododiodio constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Evangelist William Larbi, said: “my vision for the people of Odododiodio is to ensure that every child of school-going age in the constituency is put in school.”
In the area of job creation, the PPP parliamentary aspirant explained that since most of the youth in the constituency are artisans, he will put them into groups in a form of cooperatives to help them access jobs.
“I will not only do that but will also retrain them to become more skillful so as to be able to use modern equipment and tools, because some of them need some sort of formal training to polish their raw talents,” he added.
