Political science lecturer with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is charging parliament to pass a law that sets academic qualification for anyone who aspires to become a member of the legislative arm of government.

According to Kwesi Amakye Boateng, this will ensure quality representation and contribution to the work of parliament.

Amakye Boateng was speaking to host of Abusua Nkommo, Kwame Adinkrah in response to raging discussion on about Member of Parliament for Akwatia over her poor grammar.

Mercy Ama Sey has been ridiculed in sections of the media following her address to mark Ghana’s 60th anniversary celebration in her constituency.

But the political science lecturer believes the only way to safeguard the integrity of parliament is to set standards.

“I think parliament must pass a law to make sure there is a certain level of academic qualification before one can contest to become a Member of Parliament,” he said.

“Parliament is a serious place where serious academic work takes place..a lot reading and understanding is done in parliament and there must be some quality in terms of the people we elect into that house,” Amakye Boateng added.

According to Kwasi Amakye Boateng, “at least a minimum of first degree is enough qualification to be expected of anyone that seeks to represent his or her people in people.”
