A ten member delegation from Essam in the Bia West Constituency of the Western Region, on Wednesday came to meet a section of Members of Parliament from the Western Region to announce the death of their relative Hon. Michael Coffie Boampong, former MP for the constituency.
Led by Mr. S. G. Boampong, elder brother of the late MP, other members were, Tanoh Abednego, Evans Boateng Boampong, Monister Kwateng and Mr. Yaw Addae.
The rest were Samuel Amari, Yaw Amoako, Philip Kwarteng, Clement Kwarteng and Kwasi Kumah.
The MPs they met were, Hon Sampson Ahi, MP for Bodi and Chairman of the Western Region MPs caucus, Hon. Richard Acheampong, MP for Bia East, Hon. Kwabena Minta Akandoh, MP for Juaboso and Hon. Dekah Peter Yaw, Amenfi Central.
Briefing the MPs, the spokesman for the delegation Mr. Evans Boateng Boampong stated that the news about the death of the MP was broken to them last Monday night and as tradition demands, they need to come and verify for themselves at the 37 military Hospital in Accra where the death was said to have taken place.
He said on reaching the Hospital they found out that the news was true.
However, since their late relative was a former MP, they had come to confer with his colleagues in order to plan towards the week celebration and the date for the final funeral.
Hon. Ahi advised them to ensure that the funeral of the late MP was devoid of any thing that would mare it since the Late MP was a peaceful man who was admired by all, especially his colleagues and staff of parliament who received his death with shock.
He told them that as their former colleague, they could not impose the date of the funeral on the family because everybody belongs first to a family before any association.
Also, as Sefwi tradition demands, the date of the final funeral will be determined during the one week celebration.
Initially, it was agreed that the week celebration will take place on February 8, 2018. However, the issue of State of the Nation Address by the President to Parliament cropped up and a decision was reached to peg the date on Monday February 5, 2018, exactly a week after the MPs death.
Nevertheless, it was subject to further consultation with the family members and elders back home.
The MPs urged the delegation to expedite through their preparation for the one week celebration which will determine the final date for the funeral, though it should not be rushed through.
It was however agreed that it should be before the Easter holidays when MPs break for the occasion in order to attract more MPs.
Also Former Presidents John Dramani Mahama and J.J Rawlings, as well as leadership of the NDC should be informed.
