Accra, July 26, GNA - The Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo, Mr. Jonathan Nii Tackie-Komme, has called on the electorate to take advantage of the opening of the Voters Register on July 31, this year to register to enable them to exercise their franchise in the December elections.
Addressing a meeting of the Working Class Group of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Accra on Friday, he noted that elections were won with numbers and urged supporters of the Party to patronize the 10-day exercise. They should also ensure that all those who were 18 years and above had their names in the register to enable them to vote for the person of their choice to represent them in parliament and the NDC to form the next government.
The MP told members of the Working Class Group who are made up of employees of financial institutions, offices and other workers and traders within the Central Business District of Accra, not to leave the exercise on Executives of the Party and officials of the electoral Commission alone. "Register and encourage all those who are qualified but have not registered for one reason or the other to do so," he said. Mr Tackie-Komme advised them to be extra vigilant and to call the attention of the Party's registration agents when they found anyone not resident in the constituency trying to register in the area. He said the NDC constituency office had information that an unnamed political party had planned to bus people from other areas to register at Odododiodioo in their desperation to win the seat from the NDC.
Mr. Tackie-Komme appealed to the electorate to retain him and to vote for Professor John Evans Atta Mills, Presidential Candidate of the NDC to form the next government. He stated that his focus as an MP after winning a by-election in 2005 had been the provision of educational infrastructure, including the provision of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratories for schools and other social services, which benefit a cross-section of the people in the area and appealed to them to vote for him and the NDC in the December general election.
The MP stated that some of the schools that benefited from projects he initiated included the Holy Trinity Cathedral Secondary School, Bishop's Mixed JSS, Richard Akwei Memorial School, St Mary's Anglican, Derby Avenue and Private Odartey Lamptey, Bishop's Girls, Independence Avenue and the Ayalolo Cluster of schools. Mr. Tackie-Komme explained the work of an MP and said Assembly Members through the various metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies executed development projects.
Mr. Kotei Ashie, NDC Ward Co-ordinator for Korle Workon, called on the people not to heed those who would try to confuse them to vote for the Presidential Candidate of the party and to reject the MP. He pointed out that Prof Atta Mills would need the support of as many MPs from the NDC as possible to support him to successfully implement his programmes and plans to lift Ghana out of the "doldrums". Mr. Ashie noted that the contest in this year's elections was between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC and urged the people to unite solidly behind the MP to retain the seat. Mr. Albert Acolatse, Chairman of the Working Class Group, called on the members to reject the NPP in the elections.
