Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Christopher Tawiah, Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer has called on stakeholders in Election 2012 to operate under the Public Order Act to facilitate peaceful electoral campaigns.
He said: “The Act guarantees the fundamental human rights of assembly, freedom to take part in procession, demonstration and rallies.
ASP Tawiah who made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani on Monday, said most people especially politicians during election years turned deaf ears to the Act and hurriedly organised rallies without police notification therefore creating inconveniences for the Ghana Police Service and the public.
“The Police will not relent in its efforts but ready to enforce the Act to regulate exercises of the citizenry’s freedom as enshrined in the Constitution.”
ASP Tawiah said the Police was well prepared after series of training and the acquisition of modern gadgets to deal with any electoral crisis.
“We are ready to work efficiently without favoritism as mandated by the Constitution for peaceful Election 2012,” he said.
He therefore called on stakeholders to co-operate fully with the Police to ensure absolute peace in the Region before, during and after the General Election.
