Political parties in Oguaa to march for peace

Cape Coast, Nov 16, GNA - Political parties in the Cape Coast Municipality would on Tuesday November 23, go on a 'peace march' to create awareness on the need to ensure that the ongoing electioneering campaign and the general election are conducted peacefully. The Executives of the various political parties took the decision to go on the march when they met with the Central Regional Police Command at Cape Coast, to discuss political events in the area. At the meeting were representatives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the People's National Convention (PNC).

The peace march is particularly meant to sensitise supporters of the parties to comport themselves, following an accusation by the NDC that supporters of the NPP vandalised their office, during an NPP rally last Tuesday.

The Police are investigating the incident.

Addressing the meeting, the Regional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent William Twumasi asked the parties to adhere to the electoral laws, as well as the Public Order Act, in order to safeguard the prevailing peace.

He called on them to avoid holding rallies in front of offices of their opponents as provided in the electoral law, which required them to keep away from such premises, by a mandatory distance of 500 metres. Chief Superintendent Twumasi also reminded them not to hold rallies beyond 1800 hours.
