Poor response to voter registration in Asante-Akim

Response to the limited voter registration exercise to provide opportunity for those who have attained the legal voting age of 18 to get their names on the electoral roll has so far not been encouraging in the Asante-Akim South Constituency.

Two days into the exercise, some centres visited by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) had registered below 20 applicants.

At the Obogu Central Hall, for example, 14 voters had gone through the registration as at mid-day on Tuesday.

The situation was even worse at Banso East, where seven people had registered.

A total of 15 names had been added to the roll at Banso West, while the register had increased by 27 at the Obogu West.

The patronage at Obogu D/A JHS, however, was a bit encouraging with 64 new voters having registered during the period.

Registration officials and political party agents who the GNA spoke to blamed the not too impressive patronage on low publicity.

Mr Afrifa Blankson said they did not anticipate any problems and that the registration equipment, were functioning perfectly.
