A pro-National Democratic Congress (NDC) Group calling itself ‘Eastern for Portuphy’ (EFOP) in the Eastern region has descended heavily on the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Kwabena Adjei for allegedly making undemocratic comments.

According to the group, Dr. Adjei told some NDC supporters that he would not contest in the forthcoming national delegates’ congress because he was ‘NDC National Chairman for life.’

The group therefore described the alleged comments by Dr. Adjei aka ‘Wayo, Wayo’ as unfortunate, calling on the National Council of Elders and National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party to call the national chairman to order.

NDC, the group pointed out, must seen to be a party that embraces internal democracy.

A statement signed by Director of Communications of the group, Richard Etornam was issued in reaction to the supposed story with headline, “I am chairman for Life-NDC Chair,” which was published by Ghanaweb on Wednesday, December 11, 2013.

“Having been around for close to 30-40 years, I know the concerns of the youth and given the opportunity I will do everything possible to address their concerns. We have not struggled in vain, and I would not leave the scene for a novice; I ought to complete what I began, it quoted Dr. Adjei as saying.

The group pointed out that in accordance with the constitution of the NDC, no individual could assume any position for life.

“We wish to state our displeasure in no uncertain terms concerning his undemocratic statement. Per the party’s constitution, no single individual can assume any position for life or ever, hence were taken by utmost shock when we read his publication online.

“National Congress will be due next year and obviously other comrades within the party have intentions of contesting for the national chairmanship position.

“We think it is most unfortunate and he must be called to withdraw such an undemocratic and inflammatory statement since it has the tendency of opening the floodgates for other aspirants to break the rule,” it stated.

The group subsequently appealed to NDC sympathizers to reject the utterance of the party’s national chairman and prepare assiduously towards the national congress next year.
