Tamale, March 7, GNA - Mr Albert Atutiga, a leading Member of the Convention People's Party (CPP), on Monday commended President John Agyekum Kufuor for exercising his prerogative of mercy to Mr Kwame Peprah, a former Minister of Finance Mr Victor Solormey, a former Deputy Minister of Finance in the NDC government.

He said the gesture was a further boost in strengthening the country's infant democracy.

"This is the first time in the country's political history that such a gesture has been extended to political opponents and we all need to praise the President for that".

Mr Atutiga told the GNA in an interview in Tamale that the release of the two ex-ministers would further reconcile the nation particularly members of the NDC and that they would come back to contribute their quota towards building their party.

He said they were not mean people but stalwarts of the main opposition NDC and that the release would help that party to form a more formidable force in the country.

Mr Atutiga called on the security agencies to strengthen their surveillance and night patrols so as to stem arm robbery. He said that some of the prisoners the President pardoned were hardened criminals who would again join their colleagues to perpetuate the same acts and advised the President not to use age as criteria for pardoning prisoners. 07 March 05
