St Louis Secondary to sack failures

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) - With effect from the next academic year, students of the Saint Louis Girls Secondary School in Kumasi, who fail continuously in their first, second and third term examinations, will be dismissed. Teachers who also failed to deliver would be shown the exit.

Madam Johanna Johnson, the headmistress, announced this at a Family Day organized by the school in Kumasi at the weekend as part of the activities marking its golden jubilee celebration. The decision, according to her was part of stringent measures aimed at improving the academic performance of the students.

Madam Johnson was not happy that the school, which ranked second best in the Ashanti Region some years ago plummeted to the fourth position during the last academic year. “This is disturbing. If a student fails continuously in the first, second and third term examinations, then it means there is something wrong with her. She must be withdrawn,” she said.

“Similarly, the headmistress said, if 70 per cent of the students fail continuously in a particular subject, then it means there is something wrong with the teacher responsible for that subject and he or she must go.”

Speaking on the topic, “Responsible Parenthood,” Mr I.A. Adjei, a Guidance Coordinator of the Ghana Education Service, urged parents and guardians to endeavour to see to the spiritual and physical development of their children and wards. Parents, he said, were legally obliged to provide health, security, shelter, food, education and other basic needs of their children. “If these obligations are not fulfilled, the child eventually becomes a burden not only to the parents but also to the nation,” Mr Adjei stated.

He further advised parents to constantly monitor the academic performance of their children to enable them to know their handicaps and other problems and how to solve them. A new ?250 million dormitory block built by the Parent Teacher Association was commissioned. – The Ghanaian Times.
