Kumasi, March 5, GNA - Alhaji Hamidu Mohammed, the Oforikrom constituency chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the party's supporters not to be perturbed by the recent resignation of Professor Wayo Seini a leading member of the party. This development, he said will not change the NDC's fortunes. He said the NDC believed in democratic principles and will, consequently, not stand in the way of anybody, who for one reason or the other decides to quit the party or cross carpets.
Alhaji Mohammed was addressing an extraordinary meeting of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the Tertiary Educational Institution Network (TEIN) of the NDC in Kumasi on Saturday.
The meeting also had in attendance members of the Sunyani Polytechnic branch of the TEIN and was to enable the participants brainstorm ideas in formulating policies to strengthen the student front of the party.
Prof Seini until his resignation was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central, a seat he won on the ticket of the NDC in 2004 elections.
Alhaji Mohammed pointed out that the party had over the years lost some of its key members, yet remained focused and resolute towards pursuing its mission statement and agenda to come back to power. He decried what he alleged was attempts by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to induce leading members of the NDC to join their camp so as to weaken the support base of the latter and also hang onto power, even though most Ghanaians were fed up with the harsh economic policies of the government.
"Well-meaning NDC supporters should resolve to reject offers from the opposition to defect, since the practice threatened the principles of multi-party democracy and sustenance of good governance", he noted. The constituency chairman called on the party's leadership to resolve to bring back aggrieved members back to the fold of the party to enhance the party's chances of coming back to power in 2008. Mr Abdul-Manan Abdullai, acting President of the KNUST branch of TEIN, said the Network will soon hold elections to usher in new executive members to ensure effective co-ordination of their activities.
