The Electoral Commission (EC) has entreated members of the general public to be extra careful in keeping guard their voters ID cards to prevent losing them ahead of the November polls.

The EC expressed worry over the number of people misplacing their voters’ ID cards.

The replacement of lost voters ID cards which begun simultaneously with the limited registration exercise is ongoing.

Unlike previously, when the process was at no cost to the applicant, the process now attracts a fee of GHC5.00.

Applicants are expected to pay GHC5.00 replacement fee at the Ghana Commercial Banks (GCBs) and present a slip to the commission for replacement.

Speaking to Ultimate news’ Theresah Oppong, the Ashanti Regional Deputy Director of the EC, Lawrence Sarpong explained that collection of GHC5.00 is to prevent the Commission from contracting additional cost from the replacement of cards.

‘Since the limited registration that we started, we are replacing lost ID, cards are still continuing that activity, if you have lost your ID Cards, you go to any Commercial Bank (GCB) and pay a replacement fee of GHC5 into a special account opened for that purpose, because replacing lost cards is a lot of money. The way people are losing their cards, if it doesn’t attract fee, it will be a burden on the country and the Commission,’ he explained.
