NORTHERN YOUTH ENDORSE AMBROSE DERRY

By Newman Dotse

The Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions have endorsed Hon. Ambrose Derry, Member of Parliament for Lawra/ Nandom constituency, who double as the Deputy Minority Leader of Parliament, as the running mate for Nana Akufo Addo, the flagbearer of the NPP for the forthcoming presidential election. The three northern regions have maintained that the selection of a running mate is the most important decision a presidential candidate can make because if elected during the general elections, the running mate becomes the vice president and would have to be ready to step in as president when it becomes necessary.

“In fact, article 60 (6) of the 1992 constitution specifically provides that if in the event such as sickness, death, resignation or removal from the office of the president, the vice president shall immediately assume office as president for the remainder of the president’s term. Hon. Abrose Derry has the capacity and the credentials to potentially act as President of the Republic of Ghana, in the absence of the president,” They maintained.

According to a statement signed by Mr. Abudu Muniru, the Wa Central Constituency Youth Organizer, on behalf of the three Northern regions, Hon. Ambrose Derry has the ability to marshal votes, adding that the votes the NPP received in the Lawra/ Nandom constituency from 2004 to 2008 elections prove the worth of Honourable Ambrose Derry.

“Hon. Ambrose Dery is a household name across the country. Anyone can argue that the Upper West Region where he comes from is the tiniest of the Northern sector of the country in terms of population and size; and therefore incapable of affecting the electoral fortunes of any party. According to the 2000 Population and Housing census, 49.8% of Ghanaians who traced their ethnic origins to the Upper West Region actually lived outside the Region. Hence, who can say this has no bearing on national elections?,” the statement queried. They said a presidential team comprising Nana Addo and Ambrose would be good for the party’s victory in the forthcoming elections, adding that Ambrose had been tried, tested and proven to be competent enough to support Nana Addo for the presidential seat.

According to them, Ambrose Dery as MP, a lawyer by profession, former Deputy Minister for Justice and Attorney General and the former Upper West Regional Minister under the Kufuor administration, is better placed for the vice presidential slot for victory in December.
