Tamale, Oct.07, GNA - The Regent of Tamale, Gulkpe-Na Alhaji Abdulai Ziblim, has commended the leadership of Parliament for bringing the Legislature closer to the people through its "Public Forums" being organised in the regions.
He said: "this is a process of consensus building and I urge you to carry the views of the people at the grassroots to the House and let their concerns guide you when passing laws".
The Gulkpe-Na made the commendation when the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Ebenezer Sekyi-Hughes called on him at his Palace to thank him for hosting the leadership of Parliament at a public forum on Parliament held in Tamale last Tuesday.
He urged Parliament to make the forum a regular affair in its agenda to educate the people on the proceedings of the House, to help unite the people at the grassroots.
On the Domestic Violence Bill, Alhaji Ziblim told the Speaker that the customary laws of the people in the North "do not allow a woman to send the husband to court", saying that if that happened, it would destroy the marriage.
He therefore appealed to Parliament to soberly reflect on the bill before the House passed it into law.
The Gulkpe-Na told the Speaker that the Tamale Sports Stadium Project was so dear to the hearts of the people that no effort should be spared to expedite commencement of work on the facility to offer jobs to the youth.
Mr Sekyi-Hughes thanked the chiefs and people of the Northern Region for the impressive turn out at the forum, noting: "This shows the interest you have in democracy..."
He said the Parliamentary forums would help the House to formulate better laws for the country and promised to convey to the House the views and concerns raised at the Tamale forum. The Speaker congratulated the people in the region especially, those in Dagbon for allowing peace to prevail in the area.
