Mr Shaibu Abubakari, Upper East Regional representative on the National Peace Council on Tuesday called on the people of the region to remain peaceful after the Supreme Court’s verdict on the election petition.
He reiterated the council’s commitment to ensure that the country was peaceful and said the council was up to the task under the leadership of Reverend Emmanuel Asante, in seeking to maintain peace in the country.
He gave the assurance at a forum in Bolgatanga, where chiefs, opinion leaders, women groups, political party representatives, the clergy, officials of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and heads of department attended.
Mr Shaibu Abubakari, who is also the Director of Belim Wusa Development Association (BEWDA) said whatever happens in the country also affects the Upper East Region, especially after the Supreme Court verdict.
He said to attract investment into the country, especially to the Upper East Region, it was vital to maintain the peace and urged residents in the region to project the region and all northern parts of the country as one of the best, devoid of conflicts.
“If the peace is disturbed, each one of us would be disturbed,” the council member added.
Bon Naba Salifu Aleemyarum, Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional area advised journalists to be circumspect in the way they asked questions in their interviews, saying that some of the journalists push interviewees to pass comments that were likely to induce passions.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Peoples National Convention (PNC) representatives showed appreciation to the organizers of the forum and rededicated their commitment to peace.
Mr Michael Abooro, Youth Organizer of the NPP said the supremacy of the constitution should reign, and the court ruling should be respected.
The forum, which was chaired by Pe Joseph Apagache II, Paramount Chief of the Nakong Traditional Area, attracted messages from the Ghana Police Service, represented by Mr Alex Asamoah Frimpong, Regional Crime Officer on the preparedness of the police to ensure peace and security in the region.
