Reverend Esther Antwi of the Faith Prayer Centre at Mamprobi Camara in Accra has noted that poverty could only be eliminated if Members of Parliament (MPs) would sincerely invest in the youth to make them self-employable.
She said this would stop the youth from migrating to urban centres in search of non-existing jobs.
Rev. Antwi who is also the Proprietor of Awo’s Fashion in Accra, was speaking when the MP for Ablekuma Central, Mr. Theophilus Tetteh Chaie donated six sewing machines at the cost of GH¢1,500 to people she had trained in dressmaking.
She commended the MP for investing in the training of the graduates which she said would go a long way to curb the rate of unemployment.
Rev. Antwi advocated the active involvement of chiefs, churches and the rich in the community to contribute to the objectives of the MP to enhance the status of women in the Ablekuma Central Constituency.
Mr. Chaie urged Rev. Antwi to monitor the work of the graduates closely to ensure that they are well established and become assets to their families and their local communities.
He said government could not employ everyone into the formal sector hence the establishment of the Local Enterprise and Skills Development Programme under the National Youth Employment Programme.
The MP encouraged the beneficiaries to notice that the non-formal sector had yielded more profit for people who were practicing their trades.
At the Abossey Okai branch of the Ghana Tailors and Dressmakers Association, the MP donated 18 sewing machines to the graduates and urged them to work hard to earn a living.
Madam Badu Kaakyire, Zonal President of the Association received the items on behalf of the graduates.
Mr. Addo Biney, Greater Accra Chairman of the Association expressed gratitude to the MP for his prompt response to a request made by the body and advised the graduates to work hard to better their lives by becoming self-employable.**
