In a couple of months, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would go to the polls to elect its Executives to steer the affairs of the party in a quest to recapture power, but even before the time table for the contest is made public, intra-party politicking points to a keen contest.
Although the race for the national Chairperson, General Secretary and the Flag bearer have already showed signs of an abrasive contest, the race for the position of the National Youth Organizer of the NPP promises to be more competitive.
The New Crusading Guide newspaper witnessed an interesting spectacle on Sunday at the Assemblies of God Church, Lapaz, in Accra when a group of vibrant NPP youth stormed the Church in search of Samuel Awuku.
When the New Crusading Guide newspaper got closer to the group, the group leader, Yusif Braimah disclosed that they knew that was where Awuku worshiped and that they had gone there to “persuade him to contest the position of the National Youth Organizer.” The group leader explained that they were aware Awuku was unwilling to run for the position “but our confidence and trust in his organizational ability have pushed us to persuade him to contest”
According to the group, although they knew Mr Awuku was in the United State of America as a guest of the US government, they had wind that he (Awuku) was supposed to be in Ghana over the weekend hence the ambush in his church to coerce him to contest the position.
The group after establishing contact with the Crusading Guide again stormed our Labone offices yesterday in search of the telephone numbers of Mr. Awuku after they had read in the media that six persons in the NPP were lacing their boots for the Youth Organizer post.
In fact, the pressure on Mr. Awuku, a young man with a calm but firm disposition continues to mount further on social media particularly Facebook as his friends both in and outside his party pester him with similar calls.
So intense has the pressure been that, Awuku, one of the few effective communicators in the party responded on his Facebook wall saying “i want to Ttank the NPP youth on social media for your support, calls email and texts and all means of contacting me. Clearly the conditions we face today are fearsome, but so are our strengths, Great young men and women must move to defend a great cause. I hope to make a statement on my political future and the way forward in the next few days. Is not about me or any individual, it's about championing a cause that will collectively restore confidence and give the Youth of the NPP hope. In times like this, let's tolerate and love one another, share ideas and engage in Passionate Legitimate debate devoid of insults, innuendos and aspersions and get the best strategy for our party and country. It is about our collective destiny. It is about our future. So let the work go on, Let the cause endure, lets keep our hopes alive and this dream of a Victory 2016 will never die. Mr. Awuku, who until recently was the Deputy Communication Director of the Communications Directorate of the NPP was invited by the United States Government to participate in the American Council for Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) programme, which was supposed to come to a close over the weekend.
