The Electoral Commission of Ghana has announced that it will hold press briefings for the media on Saturday, December 7, 2024, as part of its efforts to ensure transparency in the electoral process.
According to the EC's statement, the first briefing will take place at 9 a.m. on Election Day, providing updates on the elections to the general public.
Additional and subsequent briefings will be held on the same day, as well as on the following days after the elections, until the presidential results are declared.
The EC added that only media personnel who have secured accreditation for the National Collation Center will be allowed to cover the briefings.
“Media personnel who have accreditation cards for the National Collation Centre are invited to cover the Media Briefings. At 9:00 am on 7th December, 2024, the Commission will hold the first media briefing. There will be further briefings at 12:00 noon, 3:00 pm, and 6:00 pm. From 9:00 pm on Election Day, the Commission will provide Media Briefings as and when results are received from the region. Each briefing session will last no more than 30 minutes,” a statement signed by the Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey, said.
To further prevent false and inaccurate reporting and the spread of misinformation on Election Day, the EC stated that the briefings will be used to address any issues and reports.
The Commission, therefore, urged the media and the public to verify any reports regarding the elections to help curb the dissemination of unverified information.
“The Commission will also use the Media Briefings to respond to any stories and reports from around the country. The Commission therefore urges the Media and the General Public to verify any reports on the elections with the Commission to avoid sharing unverified stories on their platforms,” the statement added.
The Commission concluded by reiterating its commitment to ensuring fair, transparent, credible, and peaceful elections.
