Shameful insult to our nascent democracy – Mahama’s aide takes on EC over declaration of NPP PCs after re-collation

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to President-elect John Dramani Mahama, has criticized the Electoral Commission's (EC) re-declaration of parliamentary results for certain constituencies following a re-collation exercise.

According to Joyce Bawah, the move is "unacceptable" and an affront to Ghana's democratic principles.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she expressed disapproval over the EC's decision to re-collate and announce new parliamentary candidates for constituencies.

"What is happening today, what has happened in Obuasi East, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Tema Central, etc., is an insult/affront to our nascent democracy, unbelievable, unprecedented, and shameful.

"In Obuasi East, the re-collation led to the declaration of a new PC, Nsawam A, same thing, and let's see what happens next. Acta Non Verba," she said.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has also voiced strong opposition to the EC's re-declaration of results, labelling it "illegal and manipulated."

The party claims the process undermines Ghana's democratic values and erodes public trust in the electoral system.

In a statement, the NDC accused EC Chairperson Jean Mensa of acting with impunity, alleging that her leadership has deliberately compromised the integrity of the electoral process.

The controversy stems from the EC's decision to re-collate and declare results for nine constituencies on Saturday, December 21, 2024, following disputes over the December 7 parliamentary elections after a court order.
