Dr. James Kwabena Bomfeh, alias Kabilla, an Nkrumaist and a Development Studies Ph.D. holder, has criticized those calling for a state of emergency to be declared over galamsey.

There is currently a major crusade against illegal mining in Ghana, known locally as galamsey, with crusaders vehemently imploring President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to declare a state of emergency and cease all small-scale mining operations.

The proponents believe this is the way forward to stopping galamsey activities that have contaminated water bodies and the environment.

However, Kabilla, who is a former Acting General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), shares dissenting views on the call for a state of emergency.

According to him, those making the calls are only doing so because they have a "regime change agenda."

Kabilla argued that if they truly seek an end to this menace, they should get to the "root of the matter" instead of making demands on the President.

He noted that it is not the fault of the incumbent government under the leadership of President Nana Addo that galamsey persists; rather, this issue dates back to the early 2000s, with some organizations and individuals raising alarms over the dangers of galamsey operators.

The former CPP General Secretary made these points during Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show.
