Nana Yaa Jantuah, former Director of Public Relations and External Affairs at the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), has expressed concerns about the Commission’s recent effectiveness.

In a Citinewsroom.com report, she lamented the increasing politicization of the Commission by the current government, citing concerns about undue political influence and interference in PURC’s operations.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Channel One TV, she suggested that the situation at PURC could have been significantly improved with stronger support from President Akufo-Addo.

She believes his leadership and guidance could have positively impacted the Commission’s effectiveness.

Nana Yaa Jantuah criticized the lack of support from President Akufo-Addo, contrasting it with the support received under previous administrations, including H.E John Dramani Mahama, H.E J.E. Atta-Mills, and H.E J.A. Kufuor.

“PURC has become politicized and weakened. If they had received the same level of support from President Akufo-Addo as they did from former presidents, things would have been different,” she remarked.

When questioned about current presidential support for PURC, she responded, “I don’t think so.”

She criticized the government for not adequately supporting PURC in fulfilling its regulatory responsibilities to utility consumers.

“What President Akufo-Addo has provided to PURC is the fact that PURC is his advisor, as the law clearly states that PURC advises the government... I don’t think so, because if it was, some of the issues we are witnessing wouldn’t have occurred.
