The Director of Communication of the campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has refuted claims by members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that Dr. Peter Appiahene, a Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), attended a campaign event of the NPP flagbearer.

According to Miracles Aboagye, the event in question was not a campaign but the Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-Scale Mining organised by the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), to which Vice President Dr. Bawumia was also invited.

He added that the EC Deputy Commissioner was not only a lecturer at UENR but also a head of department at the university, and his presence shouldn’t be surprising.

“Dr. Appiahene is not a member of our campaign; that event was not a campaign event. The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) organises an annual event, a dialogue series. This was the 5th Series they are holding, and they invited Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the guest speaker.

“So, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia went to the university to give his remarks. Dr. Appiahene is a lecturer and a head of department at the University of Energy and Natural Resources, so anyone who tells you he is part of our campaign team is lying,” he said during an interview on Neat FM on Friday, May 17, 2024.

He added, “The university invited Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and he honoured the invitation… unless we are saying that if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia or John Mahama goes to an event and Jean Mensa is there, she should run away. If we go to a funeral or a church, she should run from there; otherwise, it makes no sense.”

Miracles Aboagye’s remarks come after members of the NDC, including the party’s Deputy Bono Communication Officer, Eric Adjei, claimed the Deputy EC Commissioner was at a recent campaign event of the NPP flagbearer at UENR.

“What they are doing is creating a monster for the future. Because you can't tell me that after doing everything you want and the election is over, the clergy would go round speaking about peace.

“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia went to meet small-scale miners during his campaign tour, and I saw Appiahene there. The excuse given was that he is a lecturer at UENR and he was accompanying the vice-chancellor. Even the Bible says that 'we are allowed to do anything, but not everything is good for us to do',” Adjei said in Twi during a panel discussion on Ark FM on May 14, 2024.

He added, “The fact that you are even a matter of contention in the country, you should not even go near a flag of the NPP. When Bawumia went to meet the small-scale miners, did he not go to speak about the interest of his political party? Have you ever seen Afari-Gyan at any political programme organised by Legon?”

GhanaWeb cannot confirm the event Eric Adjei was referring to, but the recent event the Vice President attended at UENR since he started his nationwide campaign tour was the 3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-Scale Mining on May 10, 2024.
