The re-birth of the nation Ghana

Tue, 10 Sep 2013 Source: Youth Movement for African Unity

The Youth Movement for African Unity (YMAU) on 8th August, 2013, added our voice in the call for peace, tolerance, unity and respect of the rule of law by appealing to the parties in the just ended Supreme Court case to accept the verdict. This became evident on 29/08/2013 when the verdict was read by Justice William Atuguba at the Supreme Court of Ghana. There was order in the Court room and in the entire nation.

YMAU writes to say a big thank you to God Almighty, the Justices that presided over the case, the political parties (NDC & NPP), other political parties that added their voices, the Peace Council, local and international stakeholders, the youth groups and all Ghanaians for making this wonderful effort to maintaining peace. Ghana is the winner and the whole of Africa is proud and will always cite Ghana as an example of a growing democracy on the continent.

Today the 30th of August is the rebirth of the country Ghana. On April 1957 at Montgomery, Alabama, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke on “The Birth of a New Nation” Sermon, delivered at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, the story of the Exodus the flight of the Hebrew people from the bondage of Egypt. This he said was something of the story of every people struggling for freedom, and it demonstrates the stages that seem to inevitably follow the quest for freedom. Dr. King spoke about Ghana in his speech and relating it to the new nation; he said there existed a country known as the Gold Coast, this country was a colony of the British Empire and was among many countries that suffered all of the pain and the affliction and including slavery inflicted upon it by other nations who know themselves.

Fellow Ghanaians, what excites me is his reference to Ghana as a little country with a population of about five million people exploited and its people treated with injustice, but Ghana won at the end and stood tall in history. Every person, be it an adult or a child sang freedom! Freedom! Freedom at last. This piece of history is but to remind us of how strong we are as a people, how a united people fought for the freedom and independence and became the beacon of hope for the rest of the continent and this was Ghana at birth.

However, we have moved from military rule, to civilian rule, and through many critical times. This Supreme Court contest if care was not taken would have resulted in obliteration of the peace in country, all the hard work and sacrifices by the living and the dead who would have felt insulted and ashamed that we lead our country to ruin.

But as it stands right now, Ghana has once more prevailed. Please let us all say this prayer “O God, our gracious Heavenly Father, help us to see the insights that come from this new nation. Help us to follow Thee and all of Thy creative works in this world, and that somehow we will discover that we are made to live together as brothers, and that, it will come in this generation: the day when all men will recognize the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. God bless our homeland Ghana and God bless Africa Amen” By Abdul-Razak Yakubu President & Co-founder Youth Movement for African Unity (Razak@ym-au.org)
