About twenty members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Jomoro Constituency in the Western Region have crossed carpet to the NDC and destroyed party's T-shirts.
This happened during the tour of former President John Mahama in the constituency on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 to canvass votes from the NDC delegates.
To usher these defectors, their leader, Clement Ackah said they have never liked nor voted for NDC before because they were NPP members but promised to vote for the NDC in 2020 and beyond.
He claimed they played various roles, including polling station agents and also were instrumental in grassroot mobilization of the party in the 2016 general elections.
He hailed the NDC for developing the Jomoro Constituency than the NPP government hence changed their minds to join the NDC.
He added that most of the developmental projects in their area were provided by the NDC most especially Roads, Schools,Chip zone, electrification in the rural areas,Toilet facilities and water projects.
However, upon reflection, they have noted that the NPP is only using them and their communities as election winning machines and have failed to bring development to improve their living standards.
The defectors, led by Clement Ackah and Ibrahim Taller set fire into 2016 campaign T-shirts of the sitting president Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo and the Member of Parliament for the area, Paul Essien to signify their disappointment in their administration.
The Western Regional Chairman of the party, Nana Kwame Toku blessed the twenty defected members and with the help of his Excellency John Dramani Mahamma, Armah Kofi Buah MP for Ellembelle and the Constituency Executives welcomed them in peace and promised to fulfill their grievances come 2020 when Mr. Mahamma take over the mantle from the Akufo-Addo led administration.
Speaking to the media after the event, a defected named Ibrahim Taller said they were not bribed by the NDC to make such bold decision but said they joined the NDC not on monetary agenda.
He reaffirmed that the NPP government has failed to develop their constituency.
"Let me also add that my NPP government has brought economic hardships on Ghanaians and we need change. As we speak Ghanaians are suffering from a bad governance by Akufo-Addo government and that's why we also joined the NDC", he revealed.
He therefore, urged other NPP members who feel that things are not going on well in the country under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo to join Mr. John Mahama campaign.
