Understanding of democratic processes require skills

Sogakope, Nov 28, GNA - Mr. Edward Appiah, Executive Member of Civic Foundation, a non-governmental organization (NGO), observed that the citizenry needed to understand the democratic political process and acquire skills for effective political actions and decisions. He made the observation at a public forum for parliamentary candidates in the Ketu South constituency, organized by the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) in collaboration with a local NGO, the South-Tongu Civic Union.

The parliamentary candidates were Miss Cate Aku Aglah, South Tongu District Chief Executive (DCE), contesting on New Patriotic Party (NPP) ticket, Mr Kobla Woyome, contesting on National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket, Dr Prosper Ashilevi, contesting on Convention People's Party (CPP) ticket, and Mr. Samuel Apedo, contesting on Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) ticket.

Mr. Appiah urged the electorate to pay attention to what the candidates were saying in order to be able to make informed choices. Apart from their presentations, answers were sought from the aspirants on their plans for the constituency in the fields of health including HIV/AIDS, education employment, infrastructure development, women empowerment, local governance and human rights. Miss. Aglah said she would institute incentive package for teachers and work with stakeholders to promote education in the area, empower women and provide more social amenities.

She said she would ensure the realization of a plan by two Indian and Spanish firms to establish sugarcane industries in the area and the establishment of apprenticeship centres for the training of the youth in vocational skills.

Mr. Woyome said he would promote health and assist women to get funds for economic activities and ensure the rehabilitation of roads. Dr. Asilevi said he would work for the establishment of a Technology University, agro-industries, brick and tile industry and promote tourism.

Mr. Dawukpor said he would ensure the establishment of a ceramic industry at Vume, empower women and fight against HIV/AIDS. Mr. Apedo said he would work with the Volta River Authority (VRA) for dredging of the lower Volta basin to improve aqua-culture if elected as MP.

All the candidates pledged to ensure peace during the December 7 elections. Miss Modesta Annie Sapaty, Deputy Regional Director of the NCCE, advised the electorate to exercise their franchise.
