Unity among Nkrumahists will win CPP 2012 general election- Nylander

Accra, June 12, GNA - Mr Ladi Nylander, Chairman of the Convention People's Party (CPP) on Friday noted that it would be impossible for the party to come back to power without unity among Nkrumahists. "We must move together with a heightened sense of unity and common purpose to re-define our path and commit ourselves anew to the principles of social justice, self-determination and Pan-Africanism," he said.

Speaking at a news conference to commemorate the party's 60th Anniversary, Mr Nylander said: "Whoever thinks that the CPP could be strong and formidable enough to wrest power in 2012 devoid of the unity we require, is making a big mistake." "The CPP of this Republic bears little or no resemblance to the CPP of the glorious First Republic. Our generation cannot hang on forever to the successes of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Mr Gbedemah, Mr Jantuah and other elders of the party.

"We cannot wrap ourselves in the red, white and green flag and believe that the red cockerel will crow of success without lifting a finger to win people to our side. Let us work hard and write our own history of struggle, sacrifice and success," he said. He attributed the party's disappointing performance in past elections to lack of commitment, unity and sacrifice among members. Mr Nylander expressed appreciation to the government for its intention to observe Dr Nkrumah's birthday as a holiday. He however called on the government to return the confiscated assets of the party, including the offices in Kumasi and Sunyani. Mr Nylander said the party's strategy for the country, if it ever bounces back to power would include the provision of water, energy, sanitation facilities, personal and community safety as well as bridging the gap between the North and South.

He said the party would help improve the public sector financial management system as well as develop guidelines for greater transparency and efficiency in the public sector. The occasion was graced by party officials including Kwame Sanaa Poku Jantuah, Patron, Mr Abu Sakara running mate to the CPP flagbearer in the 2008 general election and other executives. 12 June 09
