Wa, March 09, GNA - Mr Ambrose Dery, the Upper West Regional Minister, on Tuesday inaugurated a caucus of female members of district assemblies in the region with an appeal to women not to do anything that would destroy leadership in the realization of their goals.

He also called on men to offer unrelenting support to women in their crusade for empowerment because the task of nation building could not be undertaken without the contribution of women.

The inauguration was organized to coincide with a colourful durbar of Women's groups in the Wa Municipality as part of activities marking this year's Women's Day that had the theme:" Women inspiring hope and possibility".

The 45-member caucus would serve as role models for women and form an advocacy group to undertake political awareness programmes to get more women in the region elected to the district assemblies. Mr Dery appealed to chiefs, district assemblies, civil society and all interest groups to work towards effecting changes in customs and practices that would allow women to be treated with respect.

He advised the women not to be passive when the President's Special Initiative on cotton and sorghum are launched in the region. Speaking on "Women in Politics, the Challenges," Mr Edward Kapile, a Development Consultant, noted that politics in Ghana had been wrongly assumed to be the preserve for men.
