Wassa gets new district

Mpohor District has been carved out of the Mpohor Wassa East District, with its capital at Mpohor, after Parliament passed a legislation creating additional districts across the country.

The new district would have 51 polling stations and 13 electoral areas.

The old district (Mpohor Wassa East District) would now be known as Wassa East District maintaining the old district capital, Daboase, which would have 109 polling stations and 21 electoral areas.

This was made known by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpohor Wassa East, Mr Anthony Evans Amoah at the 5th Ordinary Meeting of the 6th Session of the Mpohor Wassa East District on Wednesday.

He said the creation of the new district would accelerate development in the area and subsequently improve the livelihoods of the people.

The MP entreated the assembly members to support the ongoing biometric registration exercise in the district to ensure that the Electoral Commission (EC) produces a credible voter’s register.

He appealed to those patronising the exercise to avoid using violence in registering their protest but rather express their concerns and grievances through the appropriate procedure outlined by the EC.

Mr Anthony Bassaw, Mpohor Wassa East District Chief Executive said the assembly received a total of GH?3,249,428.70 from the central government in 2011, of which GH?1,938,728.52 was from the District Assemblies’ Common Fund.

He said the money went into developmental projects and capital expenditure in the district.

Some of the projects being undertaken in the district include the construction of area council offices at Ateiku, Manso, Adum Banso, Ekutuase and Enyinabrim for the collection of revenue.

The rest include a magistrate bungalow at Daboase, magistrate court, Community-based Health Planning Services compounds, nurses’ quarters and upgrading of Mpohor market.

Others are educational facilities including three-unit classroom block at Sekyere-Abroadzewura, girls hostel facility for Daboase Senior High School (SHS), six-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at Daboase SHS, six-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at Prato No.1, four-unit teachers quarters at K9 and six-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at Akotosu.

Mr Bassaw expressed the need for peace in the district to facilitate the biometric registration exercise to produce credible register for the December General Election.**
