The Minority caucus in parliament clashed with the Chairman of Parliament Ad hoc Committee, Samuel Atta Akyea, over the leaked audio tape in which some senior police officers were allegedly plotting to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Following recommendations made by the committee set up to investigate the leaked audio tape, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, directed for a copy of the report to be submitted to the president for further action.
Notable among the recommendations is the call for the three police officers: COP Alex George Mensah, Supt. George Lysander Asare, and Supt Emmanuel Eric Gyedi to be sanctioned by the police disciplinary procedure.
However, the Chairman of the Committee, Samuel Atta Akyea, has called for the report to be rejected.
Speaking on the floor of parliament, Atta Akyea expressed his disagreement with the report, saying that the actors involved in the alleged plot should not be punished because the supposed conspiracy is illogical.
Samuel Atta Akyea, who also doubles as the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South constituency, argued that no IGP can determine the outcome of an election in the country.
“…I’m saying that what they were discussing is so illogical and its not even realistic for somebody to surmise that particular IGP can determine the outcome of an election and therefore what is the sense in punishing people for their absurd positions and their illogicality. That’s why I’m saying that the whole issue of conspiracy falls flat because they were conspiring about nothing. They were just addressing their own phobia, they were addressing their own illogicality and absurdities…”, he said.
On the same issue, Minority Chief Whip, Kwame Governs Abgodza, countering Atta Akyea’s argument, said that individuals implicated in the tape plotting to oust the IGP are people related to the ruling party, hence the argument by Samuel Atta Akyea that nobody should be punished is unfair.
“In reality, all the actors in the tape are people related to the NPP. So at what point did anybody in the NDC say that they are afraid of losing elections, then we’ve forgotten that the actors of the tape are all members of the NPP. So NDC has never participated in that tape so he is actually losing track as to what he wanted to say because nobody in NDC was captured in the tape saying that they are afraid of an IGP helping any party win an election…”, Agbodza stated.
