On Monday, September 30, 2024, a member of the NPP communications team Lawuratu Musah-Saaka, engaged in a heated exchange on illegal mining activities on Good Morning on Metro TV with journalist, Annie Ampofo.

Tensions escalated when Lawuratu urged local communities to get involved in the fight against the illegal mining menace.

She mentioned that while Akonta Mining Company operates legally, it has mined in restricted areas noting that the local communities have a role to play in tackling the menace.

"Apart from government taking part during the deployment, we as community members, should get involved and fight galamsey," she noted.

Annie quickly responded with a question, "So, we should go and fight Kate Gyamfua's mining site."

This comment infuriated Lawuratu who responded, "This is a serious matter."

Annie Ampofo further expressed concern over the NPP communicator's response.

"If you accuse me of sitting here and joking, I will be very angry with you. I will not take this.

"I take exceptions to the word you used. Do you know what you are saying, if you say citizens should start helping and fighting do you know what you are creating? The galamsey situation is already war. Do you know the arms the galamseyers are using? If we go to a site and the galamseyers do not shoot at us, we are lucky. We are lucky that Anas has not been murdered. We are lucky Erasmus has not been murdered," Annie indicated.

Public discourse on illegal mining activities intensified in the country following an announcement by the Ghana Water Limited (GWL)on August 30, 2024, that relentless illegal mining activities in the Pra River, have severely disrupted their operations.
