Maverick Chuck Kofi Wayo, one time close friend of President John Agyekum Kufuor has accused his former friend of sabotaging him in his bid to form his United Renaissance Party (URP). According to Kofi Wayo, who is the leader and found of URP, he has reliable information that President Kufuor did call the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr kwadwo Afari Djan, to instruct him to delay in the registration of the Renaissance party in an attempt to frustrate him (Wayo).
Asked if he could substantiate his claim, vociferous Kofi Wayo said, “we heard it from a very reliable source” and invited another leading member of his party who also confirmed the statement.
The electoral Commission has however rejected claims by Kofi Wayo that President John Agyekum Kufuor influenced the decision by the Commission to refuse his party a certificate. According to the EC, it is fully an independent institution and that, it takes no instruction from anywhere, not even from the president.
Speaking to The Independent, yesterday, the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations, Mr Sarfo Kantanka, said the commission is currently in the process of providing a provisional certificate to Kofi Wayo’s party, adding that, it will be ready by next week.
He explained that, the refusal by the Commission to issue certificate to Kofi Wayo’s Party had to do with some constitutional matters, which has nothing to do with the president of the country. According to him, the matter would be settled when the party is issued with a provisional certificate next week. Kofi Wayo described politicians in Africa as political entrepreneurs who are only in politics to make money and amass wealth. On his plans on how he intends to govern the country, he expressed shock at the level of salaries in the country, which he said, are so meagre that workers in Ghana are unable to use it to solve their problems.
“Workers cannot use their salaries to buy houses, they can’t make ends meet, they can’t live comfortably,” he said and quizzed “so who is the economy for?”
The founder of URP said, a government under his party’s administration would establish credit schemes for workers as a measure to cushion them and to make them lead lives that befit the status of the hen that lays the golden egg.
“I will put in place a system that will sustain Ghana’s economy and not one that will only go to the advantage of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund,” he said.
