The People’s National Convention (PNC) has revealed that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia reached out to console their flagbearer, Bernard Mornah, after he was disqualified from the 2024 presidential race.

According to PNC Chairman Samson Asake Awingobit, the party had anticipated sympathy from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), given the political alignment often attributed to the PNC.

However, no such support came from the NDC leadership, including former President John Mahama or other key figures like Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Fifi Kwetey, and Omane Boamah.

Speaking on Asempa FM on October 9, 2024, Awingobit expressed surprise at the gesture from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia, who was least expected to reach out.

"Could you imagine that since the time we did our election, the filing of our nomination and the Electoral Commission disqualified us, people who believe that my candidate, Bernard Mornah, is an ally to the NDC... could you believe nobody from the NDC, not even President Mahama... called Bernard Mornah to sympathize with us?" onuaonline.com quoted him to have said.

Awingobit added that they initially suspected the NPP was behind their disqualification, alleging a possible orchestration by the Electoral Commission (EC). However, he admitted the party was taken aback when Dr. Bawumia personally called Mornah to offer words of comfort.

“You know who called? I had a cold when he [Bernard Mornah] told me. He said it was the New Patriotic Party presidential candidate, His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Even I and my leader were saying that it was NPP that made Jean Mensa disqualify us.

“But the one you think is your enemy is not your enemy. Dr. Bawumia could pick up his phone and say, 'My younger brother, it is well with you,'” Awingobit recounted.
