Recent news reported that Kwadwo Asante, the Member of Parliament for Suhum, and Cynthia Morrison, the MP for Agona West, had allegedly rescinded their decision to contest as independent candidates in the 2024 general elections.

This report came after the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, indefinitely suspended Parliament following the circulation of photos showing both MPs with the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, Kwadwo Asante has denied rescinding his decision to contest the Suhum seat as an independent candidate.

According to him, he had already been removed from the NPP MPs’ platform at the time he filed his nomination.

He further explained that he remains steadfast in his decision and is unconcerned about the consequences, asserting that his allegiance lies with his constituents, not the NPP.

His PA had initially stated that the NPP had approached the MP to rescind his decision but to no avail.

“I haven’t spoken since they added me back, and when I saw the publication claiming I had rescinded my decision yesterday, I wrote that it was fake. It’s about me, so I needed to clarify things. When they took me off [the platform], they didn’t inform me, so I don’t know why they added me back. Maybe my removal was a mistake,” Asante said.

Asante also emphasized that he no longer considers himself an NPP MP, stating, “If I go to Parliament now, my tenure hasn’t ended. To the best of my knowledge, I’m serving Ghanaians. I’m not an NPP MP; I’m the Suhum MP.”

On the other hand, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the Member of Parliament for Agona West, has also debunked reports that she had reconsidered her decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 general elections.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, she reaffirmed her commitment to running independently in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

“We wish to categorically state that these reports are false and do not reflect the Hon. MP’s current position or intentions. Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the sitting MP for Agona West, remains committed to serving her constituents and has made no such announcement retracting her decision to run independently.

“The Hon. MP’s dedication to improving the lives of the people of Agona West and advocating for the constituency’s development continues to be her foremost priority. Any claims suggesting otherwise are attempts to distort the facts and misinform the public,” the statement read.

Morrison urged the media to dismiss such reports, emphasizing that she remains focused on contesting as an independent candidate.

“We urge the media and the general public to disregard these baseless claims and rely only on official statements and verified sources for accurate information. Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison remains focused on championing the needs and aspirations of the people of Agona West, with the aim of providing sustainable development and inclusive governance.”

“As the election season draws closer, we encourage supporters and constituents to remain vigilant and not fall prey to propaganda or false news aimed at misleading the electorate,” the statement added.
