Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the just-ended 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, has argued that it would not be wise for the party to abandon Dr. Bawumia after his electoral loss.
According to Dr. Prempeh, no flagbearer in the party’s history has ever won an election on their first attempt.
He emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s bid and efforts should be commended despite the outcome.
He further referenced the struggles of the current President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who only succeeded in becoming president on his third consecutive attempt.
“No flagbearer has won on their first attempt. Even Akufo-Addo won on his third try. So why ditch Dr. Bawumia?” Dr. Prempeh said in an interview, as quoted by GhOne TV’s official social media page.
The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, on Monday, December 9, declared former President John Mahama the winner of the election with a total of 6,328,397 votes. Dr. Bawumia secured 4,657,304 votes.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by Mr. Mahama, achieved historic success by gaining a majority in Parliament. According to the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, the party has so far won 185 parliamentary seats.
