Mrs. Afia Serwaa Asante Botwe, Principal Attorney at the Brong-Ahafo Regional Office of the Attorney General’s Department, has entreated women to impress on their spouses to avoid utterances that could mar peace during the December polls.
She called on children to advice their parents to promote peace before, during and after the December polls.
Mrs Botwe was addressing school children and teachers of the Ridge Experimental Primary and Junior High School at a durbar to mark the Citizen’s Day celebration in Sunyani on Friday.
The Citizen’s Day formed part of the annual constitution week celebration, instituted by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 Constitution.
Mrs. Botwe noted that, post-election disturbances and violence that engulfed some African countries resulted in deaths and destruction of property, and called on Ghanaians to preserve peace.
She asked young people to report crimes such as rape and defilement to their parents or the security agencies.
Mrs. Botwe expressed worry that, some parents sympathised with men who defiled their children instead of allowing security agencies to enforce the law. A situation she said was affecting the fight against crime.
Mr. Mohammed Manu Busi, Principal Civic Education Officer at the regional office of the NCCE, explained that the Commission had been mandated to among others, educate the public on the 1992 Constitution.
He said the NCCE had instituted the Citizen’s Day to educate the people, particularly youth, on laws of the country and democratic processes.
Mr. Busi said in view of the challenges associated with democratic practices, the Commission has been tasked to inculcate in children civic responsibilities and high sense of patriotism.**
