Benewaa Gyasi, a member of the communications team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has responded sharply to Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Bosiako’s persistent disrespect towards Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, the NDC’s vice presidential candidate.

According to her, Chairman Wontumi has singled out Prof. Naana Jane for relentless criticism, always attempting to discredit her.

“The least one would expect from a Regional Chairman who commands a large following in the Ashanti Region, where women make up the majority, is to attack a woman. Yet, this individual seizes every opportunity to make derogatory comments about her appearance, including her hairstyle,” she said.

She sternly warned Bernard Antwi Bosiako, admonishing him to refrain from his blatant disrespect towards Prof. Naana Jane, as she is far superior to him in stature and accomplishment.

“Yet, whenever Wontumi gets the opportunity, he tries to besmirch her reputation,” she stated.

She subsequently urged women from all walks of life to condemn Wontumi’s derogatory remarks about women.

“Ghanaian women need to unite and rise because Wontumi’s actions towards Prof. Naana Jane suggest that he has no regard for women as if he were not raised by a woman himself,” she noted.

In an interview with Kojo Marfo on AbusuaNkommo at Abusuafm, Benewaa expressed little surprise at Wontumi’s attack on the NDC running mate, stating that it is a hallmark of the NPP’s behaviour, which she believes is characterized by a lack of respect for women.

She stated, “I’m not surprised Chairman Wontumi is disrespecting Prof. Naana Jane. That’s the trademark of the NPP; they don’t respect their women.”

Benewaa also called on the NPP to follow the NDC’s lead in empowering women, citing the NDC’s historic decision to select Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang as their running mate as a shining example of gender inclusivity.

“What journalists are refusing to tell Wontumi is that Prof. Naana Jane is a woman of great stature. She has impressive credentials and has worked hard to reach her current position. As the first female Vice Chancellor in Ghana, Prof. Naana has paved the way for other women to follow in her footsteps," she said.
