Your IPAC boycotts won’t stop EC – NPP MP-aspirant to NDC

An aspiring parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Akwatia constituency, Mr Ernest Yaw Kumi, has told the biggest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that boycotting Interparty Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings will not affect the work of the Electoral Commission (EC).

He said IPAC is only an advisory body, but the EC was established by law and given a clear mandate to execute.

Describing the NDC’s recent boycott of an IPAC meeting as unfortunate, the parliamentary candidate insisted that the decision will not affect the work of the EC.

The NDC opted out of the meeting because it felt unfairly treated by the Chair of the election management body.

The party is also against the decision by the EC to compile a new register of voters ahead of this year’s elections.

But Mr Kumi said the NDC is doing a disservice to its members because they are missing out on an opportunity to make their concerns known to the EC.

“It is unfortunate that they boycotted the IPAC. Be it as it may, it is their right to boycott it,” he said on the 'Ghana Yensom' show on Accra100.5FM Thursday, 28 May 2020.

He added: “Since 1992, we have always understood IPAC to be an advisory body to the EC, so, whether political parties attend IPAC meetings or not, it doesn’t stop the work of the EC.”

“So, it will be proper for them to go and express their views there. The NDC is only doing a disservice to its followers.”
