More and more people are declaring themselves fit to be president and the indications are that by December, 2008, presidential candidates would be counted in the dozens.
The latest entrant is none other than Mr. Alex Hammah, a retired Trade Unionist and very interesting political figure.
Mr Hammah told The Insight that he would contest the 2008 elections as an independent presidential candidate because the political parties have failed to deliver what the people want.
He also said that the competition amongst the various parties could undermine national cohesion.
“I am coming as an independent candidate because I want to unite the nation. I very much want to fight tribalism and poverty,” he said.
Mr Hammah was a member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) until the 1966 coup after which he wrote a book criticizing the Nkrumahist Movement.
Mr Hammah has the reputation of been the most eloquent trade union leaders Ghana has ever had.
This is not the first time Mr Hammah is offering himself for a very high political office. In the 1960s or 70s he announced himself as a presidential candidate.
He was active in the People’s National Convention (PNC) and also the Arkaah-led National Convention Party (NCP).
Others who have announced their presidential ambitions include J.B Awoonor Amuzu-Williams, a founding member of the NPP, Captain Nkrabeah Effah-Dartey, former Deputy Minister of Interior and Professor Agyemang Badu Akosah, Director of Ghana Medical Service.
Others include Charles Kofi Wayo, a businessman, Dan Lartey, Leader and Founder of the GCPP and Ekow Spio Garbrah, a former Minister of Education.
It is being speculated that Dr Obed Asamoah, former National Chairman of the NDC may emerge as the Presidential candidate of the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP).
