Dr Duah to contest Offinso bye-election

Offinso (Ash.), Sept. 11, GNA -- Dr Owusu Achaw Duah, an Accra-based Medical Practitioner, has declared his intention to contest the Offinso South Constituency bye-election on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Offinso that after 33 years of medical practice in Ghana, Canada and Bahamas, it was time to get back to his roots to assist in the development of the area. The Constituency seat became vacant following the death of the NPP Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Kwabena Sarfo.

The Electoral Commission (EC), the body in charge of the conduct of elections, has fixed October 24, for the parliamentary bye-election. Dr Duah noted that people, especially in rural communities, sometimes perish from preventable deaths and said when elected, his main focus would be the promotion of good health for the people. Already, he has helped to establish a Community Clinic at Offinso, which, for the past four years, has been serving the health needs of the people in a number satellite communities.

He travels from Accra to Offinso, once in every month, to assist run the Clinic.

Dr Duah promised to expand the concept of Community Clinic throughout the Offinso District to bring quality health care closer to the people.

Additionally, he would look at the water situation, to give the people potable water and also work to improve the general environmental sanitation to enable the people lead healthy lives.

Married with five children, Dr Duah is an old Student of Konongo Odumase and Opoku Ware Secondary Schools, where he did his General Certificate of Education- Ordinary and Advanced Levels (GCE 93O=94 and =93A=94).

He attended the Ghana Medical School and came out as a Medical Doctor in 1973.

He was a lecturer and former Head of Chemical Pathology Department of University of Ghana Medical School, Korle-Bu. Dr Duah also served as Pathologist Assistant, Monfort and Riverside Hospital, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Again, he was Pathologist Consultant, Princess Margaret Hospital, Nassau, Bahamas. Currently, he is the Medical Director of Dr Martin Luther King Clinic, Accra and an External Examiner, Department of Molecular Medicine, School of Medical Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Dr Duah holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Telemedicine, USA, Diploma, American Board of Tropical Medicine (Dip ABTM), a Fellow, Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) and a Fellow, International College of Tropical Medicine (FICTM).

He is a Member, International Academy of Cytology (MIAC), American Board of Pathology (ABP), M.B Ch. B (University of Ghana). 11 Sept. 06
