Osramanae (V/R), Sept 12, GNA - Mr Napoleon Agboada,
the Director of Programmes of the National Commission on
Civic Education (NCCE), at the weekend said people who
accepted monies or other material things in exchange for
votes during elections rendered themselves "voiceless slaves
of politicians." He said such people would have no moral right to hold
the politicians accountable for their stewardship. Mr Agboada was speaking at a meeting of the commission
on the social auditing project at Osramanae in the Krachi
West District. The programme was organized by the NCCE with the
support of the United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP). The meeting tackled the essence of and the need for
female participation in local governance and the way in which
individual citizens or groups could assess the performance of
public policies, programmes and projects in order to influence
governance at all levels. "Where academic performance rating in a local school is
very poor, it should be possible for the community to call the
head of the school and brainstorm over causes of poor grates
with a view to finding solutions", he said. Mr Agboada said the best candidates in elections were
those who would continue to serve the communities they
sought to represent even if they lost. Nana Sekyere Adomako, Odikro of Osramanae on behalf
of the 13 villages making up the community, appealed to the
government for a second water pumping system to add to or
replace the current weak one. He also appealed to the government to facilitate the
building of small irrigation dams for all year round vegetable
farming.
Mrs Angelina Baiden-Amissah, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Sports, said the government was committed to improving teaching and learning and conditions of service for teachers. She condemned a recent call by the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) for the removal of the Director General of the Ghana Education Service from office and said the recruitment and dismissal of the Director General was no business of NAGRAT or any other organization.
