Political aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has disclosed that an overwhelming majority of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Council members supported the decision to hold early presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Original TV’s Adwenekasa programme on Thursday, June 19, 2025, Tonto revealed that approximately 90% of Council members voted in favour of the proposal during a recent high-level meeting in Accra.

“Almost 90 percent of the members of the National Council supported the proposal for early presidential primaries,” Tonto clarified, adding that the figure was closer to near-unanimous approval.

He also acknowledged that former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyepong, had initially suggested the idea two months earlier, a proposal that gained strong traction among party leadership.

The endorsement follows a resolution by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on June 17, 2025, officially scheduling the presidential primaries for January 31, 2026.

According to Tonto, the move is aimed at giving the party ample time to unify behind its chosen candidate and effectively strategize for the 2028 general elections.

“We believe that electing our presidential candidate early gives the party enough time to rally behind the candidate and build momentum going into the general elections,” he said.

Tonto dismissed concerns that early primaries could spark internal divisions, insisting that the party remains focused on unity and inclusivity.

He emphasised that the process would be transparent, participatory, and beneficial to all factions within the NPP.

“This is about putting the party’s interests first. We are confident this decision will strengthen our chances in 2028,” he asserted.

The NPP’s leadership, Tonto added, will continue to engage key stakeholders at all levels to maintain cohesion and ensure a smooth and credible electoral process leading into 2026 and beyond.
