A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Isaac Brako, believes that the outcome of the Akwatia by-election will have no significant impact on the 2024 general elections.
According to him, the outcome of this election may not be a reliable indicator of the general polls due to the various factors that influence general elections, which are often constituency-based.
Speaking on OTEC 102.9 FM’s afternoon political show Dwabrem, Dr Brako noted that factors like ethnicity and others can alter the dynamics of elections, making it challenging to draw direct conclusions from by-elections to general polls.
His comments come after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost its parliamentary seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the by-election, sparking concerns about the NPP’s popularity.
The NPP officially endorsed Solomon Asumadu as their parliamentary candidate on July 28, but he lost the by-election held on September 2, 2025, after securing 15,235 votes.
The NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo polled 18,199 votes out of 33,819 valid votes cast to win the seat.
