Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi is former Board Chair of GIIF
The Accra High Court has warned former Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) Board Chairman, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, to secure legal representation before Wednesday, October 27, 2025, or risk having his trial proceed without counsel.
The update was shared on the X page of GHOne TV on Monday, October 27, 2025.
"If by Wednesday you don't have a lawyer, I will proceed with the trial. Court warns Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi (Former Board Chairman, Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund)", it read.
The warning came after his counsel, Duke Aaron Sasu, announced his intention to withdraw legal representation.
ORAL: I ordered the arrest of Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi - Attorney General Dr. Ayine
Sasu had earlier filed a Notice of Withdrawal on September 11, 2025, a document confirmed by the court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvi-Tay.
Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi is standing trial alongside former GIIF Chief Executive Officer Solomon Asamoah for willfully causing financial loss to the state, intentional dissipation of public funds, and conspiracy to commit crime.
The allegations stem from a controversial $2 million transaction linked to plans for the Accra SkyTrain project.
He was granted bail of GH¢10 million with two sureties, one of whom must justify with landed property in the Greater Accra Region.
Explaining his situation to the court on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi said, “I used to have a lawyer, but this morning my counsel informed me he would not be present. The misunderstanding between us is being mediated, and I hope we can resolve it this week.”
The Accra SkyTrain project, estimated at $2.6 billion, was envisioned as an elevated light rail system to ease traffic congestion and improve air quality in the capital.
The government of Ghana signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sky Train Consortium of South Africa in 2018, followed by a concession agreement in 2019 after feasibility studies were completed.
