Baba Jamal to contest Ayawaso East by-election

A former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, has officially announced his intention to contest the Ayawaso East constituency parliamentary seat, following the death of the sitting MP, Naser Toure Mahama.

The announcement was made in a video shared on the X page of Ghana Chronicles on Tuesday, January 21, 2026.

In the video, he is heard declaring his readiness to contest the anticipated by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026, and appealed to party delegates and constituents to grant him the mandate to represent Ayawaso East in Parliament.

“I am here this morning to officially announce to each and every one of our constituency that in the coming by-election, Baba Jamal will be contesting and to seek your mandate to represent you in Parliament,” he said.

Baba Jamal noted that he has worked closely with residents of the constituency over the years and believes the time has come for a new direction.

“This is the time we need to change the narrative in Ayawaso East. We need to come together and give ourselves a different image as a people,” he stated.

He described his decision to contest as a sacrifice aimed at transforming the constituency, adding that collaboration with party delegates and community leaders would be key to achieving development.

“I believe together with you, especially the delegates who hold the future of Ayawaso East in your hands, we can change the narrative,” he said, assuring constituents of inclusive leadership and cooperation.

Baba Jamal also called for what he termed an “orientation change” to reshape the mindset of residents and drive community development.

He expressed gratitude to religious leaders, traditional authorities, party delegates, and residents for their continued support, urging them to rally behind his bid.

MP for Ayawaso East Naser Toure is dead - Reports

Baba Jamal previously contested the NDC parliamentary primary in Ayawaso East, where the late Naser Toure Mahama won with 675 votes, while he secured 525 votes.

The Electoral Commission (EC) will hold the Ayawaso East Constituency parliamentary by-election on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
