The former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, lost his highly anticipated New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026.

After the close of polls, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia once again secured victory in the election.

Agyapong has already accepted defeat and congratulated Dr Bawumia, pledging his support ahead of the 2028 elections.

However, if Kennedy reflects on the election results, four individuals will stand out as having truly surprised him based on certain occurrences during the primaries.

1.Stephen Amoah (MP for Nhyieso)

Stephen Amoah, popularly known as “Sticka,” was a key campaigner for Kennedy Agyapong ahead of the primaries. Surprisingly, Kennedy lost in Nhyieso, the constituency Amoah represents in Parliament.

Results in Nhyieso Constituency:

Kennedy Agyapong – 321

Bryan Acheampong – 91

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia – 379

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum – 4

Kwabena Agyapong – 0

Total Delegates: 889

This outcome was unexpected, given Amoah’s strong support for Kennedy.

2.Prophet Elbernard Nelson-Eshun

The General Overseer of Spirit Life Revival Ministries, Prophet Elbernard Nelson-Eshun, shocked the nation and Kennedy Agyapong with his failed prophecy.

Prior to the election, the prophet had consistently declared that Kennedy would emerge victorious, claiming that an angel of God had revealed it to him. At one point, he told Kennedy directly, “The angel said I should tell you face to face that on January 31, 2026, the number you picked during the balloting, which has become your symbol, will also be your position after the election.”

However, the prophecy did not materialize. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerged as the winner, securing the NPP’s flagbearer position for the 2028 general elections.

3.Alexander Afenyo-Markin (MP for Effutu)

Another surprise came from Effutu, the constituency of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Kennedy Agyapong recorded a landslide victory there.

Results in Effutu Constituency:

Kennedy Agyapong – 644

Bryan Acheampong – 32

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia – 79

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum – 0

Kwabena Agyapong – 2

4.Dr Bryan Acheampong (MP for Abetifi)

Dr Bryan Acheampong also surprised Kennedy Agyapong by securing victory in the Volta Region.

In 2023, Kennedy had dominated the Volta Region with 5,850 votes against Dr Bawumia’s 4,984.

However, in 2026, Bryan overtook Kennedy’s position, pulling significant support and securing more than 18% of the total valid votes cast nationwide.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerged victorious in the NPP presidential primaries, securing 110,645 votes (56.48

Kennedy Agyapong followed with 46,554 votes (23.76%), while Dr Bryan Acheampong obtained 36,303 votes (18.53%).

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum received 1,999 votes (1.02%), and Kwabena Agyapong managed 402 votes (0.21%).

In total, over 211,000 delegates cast their ballots across more than 300 polling centres nationwide in what was described as a keenly contested race to determine the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
