The United for Bawumia Support Group has congratulated former Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on his victory in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer contest, describing the outcome as a significant milestone in the party’s preparations toward the 2028 general elections.

In a statement issued after the party’s primaries, the group said Dr Bawumia’s victory reflects the NPP’s long-standing commitment to democratic principles and internal party democracy.

According to the group, the process once again demonstrated the party’s tradition of conducting free, fair and transparent elections that give delegates a strong voice in leadership selection.

The group traced the NPP’s democratic roots to the Danquah–Busia–Dombo tradition, which it said is founded on the principles of liberal democracy, justice, human rights and economic freedom.

It noted that the party has historically served as a symbol of progress and national unity since the return to multiparty democracy.

From the era of the party’s first presidential candidate, the late Prof Albert Adu Boahen credited with pioneering Ghana’s return to multiparty politics in the early 1990s to the administrations of former President John Agyekum Kufuor and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the statement said the NPP’s journey has been marked by sustained development and democratic progress.

The group described Dr Bawumia’s emergence as flagbearer as “another important chapter” in that history.

As the party turns its attention to the 2028 elections, the United for Bawumia Support Group expressed confidence in Dr Bawumia’s leadership, citing his experience in governance, policy background and leadership credentials.

The group said his victory reflects the confidence party members and the broader Ghanaian public have in his ability to lead the NPP to electoral success.

The group also highlighted the importance of unity within the party following the primaries, urging supporters to remain measured in their celebrations.

It noted that while the internal contest has ended, the larger task ahead is to build a united front as the NPP prepares to face the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general elections.

According to the statement, winning the next elections will require “hard work, dedication and unity” from all party members.

The group further appealed to other contestants in the flagbearer race to rally behind Dr Bawumia in the interest of party cohesion and a shared national vision.

“The success of the 2028 elections will depend on our ability to come together as one party, with one mission,” the group stated, adding that the NPP’s goal is to reclaim power and continue what it described as the progress achieved under previous NPP administrations.

The United for Bawumia Support Group concluded by thanking delegates, party members and supporters for their roles in the successful conduct of the primaries, expressing optimism that the NPP, under Dr Bawumia’s leadership, is well positioned to secure victory in 2028.
